Extending The Healing Ministry of Christ... and the Economics of Jesus

Hello all!

Today's topic has to do with my hospital's recent buy-out from a major healthcare company in the United States. As my hospital was crumbling under its previous ownership, we were all very excited to hear that our lease was being bought out. And then for it to be such a reputable company... we felt double blessed! Of course, there were also some fears going into a big change such as that. And quite honestly, we are still 1 week (exactly) from being at our 90 day mark where absolutely everything may (or may not) change. Next week will be a big change, fingers crossed it goes well!

Anyways, what I wanted to discuss was this new company's ideologies on making and spending money. Of course, it is much easier to spend money when you've got it in the bank. But there are so many companies out there that actually do have money in the bank, but don't spend any of it on their employees or community. This new company is different. In less than 90 days, they have already planned and began orchestrating an incredible amount of community outreach programs. They also have increased our county's healthcare spending budget by $5.4 million dollars by donating.

This company's motto is "Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ" and one way that they have made that motto very clear thus far is by throwing their heart, souls, and finances at our community in an attempt to increase the overall health of our community and to increase our community's interest in preventative health care.

They also have increased staff pay and greatly improved our insurance options while also decreasing the price. They also have increased out work life balance by working with our scheduling in order to reduce the number of times we are called at home asking us to come in to help cover a busy day.

Is this company perfect? No. But I love that they are loving their employees and their community enough to provide for us all. They understand that in order to remain viable in today's market they must compete with other hospitals that are increasing the value of their care while maintaining low costs. That's the secret of healthcare today: higher quality without an increase in pay.

I imagine of Jesus had to run a hospital, He would model it in this way. He would pour His resources and abilities into His community, showing that He cared for them. It's evidence of sacrificial giving, when so many companies exist out there that would rather hoard their money than give it back to their staff and to the community that their business lives in.

There are too many hospitals out there that assume they will remain viable simply because people will always be sick and will always need medical care. That may be true, but the competition is ever increasing. And there are way more options out there. The only way to sustain a business in this healthcare climate is to provide the best care. To provide Christ-care.

And honestly, what company would ever do poorly when all they focus on is being Jesus to others?

I am so excited to see what the coming years have in store for us here in our hometown as Christ takes over.
