Flu Shot

Hello again, everyone!

I hope we are all surviving and thriving through this hectic season of Winter morphing into spring!

My post last week was about the severity of the flu in asthmatics but this week I would like to focus on the severity of this year's flu in general, even in otherwise perfectly healthy and normal children.

This week in Palm Beach County, a 12-year old boy died at home from the flu. He seemed just a little bit sick and before his father knew it, he was unresponsive and not answering his cell phone. The neighbor came over to check on him and found him unresponsive. He was declared dead at the scene. From the Flu. Unvaccinated.

In my hunt for information and ways to pass along information, I found this really touching video from Texas Children's Hospital. These three families were all sick with the flu the same year and their children were all in for the fight of their lives.

I know the flu shot doesn't always work, but isn't it worth trying?

The biggest argument against the flu shot is that it doesn't work. And you're right, sometimes it doesn't work. But sometimes it does. There are four children in our PICU right now with the flu, 3 unvaccinated and 1 vaccinated. The 3 are intubated and on ventilators while the other one is not. The course is shorter and less severe with the shot.

And the second largest argument? That the vaccine itself will cause the flu. Some people report flu symptoms afterwards, but it those symptoms will absolutely not progress into a full-blown hospitalized flu. So get it anyways, its worth the risk.

It isn't too late to get the shot. It isn't too late to protect yourself and your loved ones from the worst recorded flu outbreak to date.
